Afrofuturism Archive
My concept for project 5 focuses on the philosophy of Afrofuturism which is the exploration of African Diaspora and Technology. This term was first influenced by writer Octavia E Butler who was an African American Science Fiction writer. Although not the creator she is known as the Godmother of this concept Her work was focused on the black experience of spae which was often not explored. For this video piece, I gathered video footage from pioneers of this concept such as Janelle Monae, Beyonce, Sun Ra, Solange, and many other black artists. I also collected footage from movies that featured black characters in their sci-fi films. I also incorporated my own art which I then turned into futuristic moving patterns. They work as the background elements for the main piece. For interaction, the user can control all the videos and either turn them black and white or change the colors of the piece as well. For the layout, I wanted to have a mirror effect of my video on both sides to contrast the normal video in its center.
