Titled "Phantasmagoria," my piece delves into the concept of dreaming and the surreal state of
consciousness that often accompanies it. The term "phantasmagoria" refers to a series of fleeting
and constantly shifting images that resemble a dream-like state. Derived from the Greek words
"phantasma," meaning ghost or illusion, and "agora," meaning assembly or gathering, this term
encapsulates the unpredictable and enigmatic nature of dreams.
To create my VR piece, I incorporated point cloud material to add a sense of volume and depth
to the virtual space for visualization but also feel unstable or disoriented. I also utilized VCV
Rack to compose a soundscape that complements the visuals and enhances the immersive
experience.
The audience is plunged into complete darkness, unable to discern what lies ahead or behind
them. Gradually, they encounter a disordered and chaotic world that seems to be devoid of order.
The path is predetermined, and the audience has no control over their journey; they can only turn
their head to explore their surroundings. This lack of agency is symbolic of the limited control
we often have in our dreams, where people, places, and objects can surface in unexpected and
unanticipated ways. These elements may be insignificant in our waking lives but can assume a
greater significance and vividness in our dreams.
